National Skill Trainer's Institute(NSTI), Dehradun has been in the service of technical vocational training for the last 35 years. This has been possible because of the vision and concerted efforts of the Directors, faculties, staff and trainees of the institute, who have contributed untiringly to the major activities of the institute namely, Long Term (One Year duration) vocational (ITI) instructor training programme under CITS, Short Term Training for upgrading the skills of engineers, supervisors, technicians, industrial worker and faculties of technical institutions in designated and tailor made (need based) in various technologies and discipline.

The institute at present offers long term training programmes in Electronic Mechanic, Electrician & Wireman, Computer Software Applications and Computer Hardware Network Maintenance and organize Staff Development Programmes for faculties working in technical institutions. The institute has a very unique work culture and has a very strong network with industry and technical institutions. The present context poses a number of challenges to the industrial training system and thus the role of the institute would be to build capacity and strengthen the existing system to meet those challenges and in turn fulfil its mandate.
